Sadly, Bubble Symphony (1994) and Bubble Memories (1996) never found their way to portable platforms. It's worth noting that this period also saw a couple of true, pure-bred Bubble Bobble follow-ups that really captured the zippy arcade vibrancy of the original. All played around with the formula and art style to borderline sacrilegious degrees, and none were received particularly well.

Game Boy owners got Bubble Bobble Part 2 in 1993 and Classic Bubble Bobble in 1999, both of which got back to the Bubble Bobble formula (but with scrolling).ĭS owners received Bubble Bobble Revolution in 2005 and Bubble Bobble Double Shot in 2007, while at around the same time (2006) the PSP received Bubble Bobble Evolution. These bubble-prisons then need to be popped before the enemy escapes in enraged form. But the bubble blowing system through which you do so really distinguishes Bubble Bobble from its arcade contemporaries.īy blowing bubbles, Bub and Bob (depending on whether you're playing 1P or 2P) can capture and neutralise enemies. This is a single-screen platformer that requires you to clear out enemies as quickly as possible. That's largely down to its simple yet deceptively sophisticated mechanics. What's remarkable about Bubble Bobble is that it remains eminently playable today, and not merely as some retro curio.
